Love and Romance are key emotions that Indian film producers have plotted Romantic Bollywood movies scripts around since start of the Indian film industry. From the legendary ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ to ‘Dil Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, These Top Bollywood Romantic movies have shown us the typical old school romance that is kind of fairytale to our Generation.

Bollywood romantic Hindi movies usually always involved scripted around the typical boy meets girl, a Family drama of couples, fight with a villain, kidnapping or happy ending at last. But thanks to the young producers and scriptwriters who changed these old romantic Hindi movie stories to kind of love of our generation. 

The Love saga of these days that could not define or describe, found its way into these films and characters.

1. Jab We Met (2007) 

The lively Geet (Kareena Kapoor) when met the heartbroken-depressed businessman Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) at Bathinda station something that called love start between them. It’s Imtiaz Ali’s one of the best movie taught us to love, laugh and live. 

The Geet’s character is that everyone expects in his life. Geet helped Aditya and become a crying shoulder for him but slowly shared a special space in his heart that both were unknown.

2. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

A most happening film on love, romance, friendship and life. Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani is not less than the DDLJ for this Generation. Being different from the old babu Shona kind of love it shows to be in love but not at the cost of sacrificing one’s passion. 

3. Kabir Singh (2019)

Movie Kabir Singh was one of the biggest hits of 2019. Though the film is criticized heavily by feminists for portraying toxic masculinity. The story of an obsessive Guy Kabir (Shahid Kapoor) who was in love with his college junior, Preeti (Kiara Advani) in a medical college. He chose the path of self-destruction after he lost his love. Kabir Singh is a must change from stereotypical love stories of Bollywood with Shahid Kapoor’s brilliant performance and good music.

4. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)

One of the best take of Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan with extraordinary acting and powerful screenplay. An ordinary guy Surinder falls for a vivacious Tani and gets married to her. But to impress her, he undergoes a complete makeover and becomes Raj. Tani would not able to recognize him and the twist come in their married life.

5. Tanu Weds Manu (2011)

Kangana always justifies her role in any kind of movie. But the act she played in Tanu weds Manu was of an extinct level. R Madhavan’s character Manu in the film as for him all that mattered was Tanu’s happiness. R Madhavan’s loved Tanu so much that he even agreed to help her to meet with her boyfriend. He kept caring for her silently until one day Tanu realized it on her own. 

6. Rockstar (2011)

Love has all the power to give a new life and goal to someone. True love can become your strength and passion. You feel safe and happy when the person you love lives around you. Heer and Jordan’s story shows us the same kind of love. Heer’s sudden recovery from her illness when he meets Jordan again was a sign of eternal love. She stands on her feet again, her blood count improves drastically. Everything is possible even miracles can happen with the power of true love.

7. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008)

The story of two college besties, Jai and Aditi. Jai the simplest Rajput guy ever and Aditi, a highly aggressive and impulsive girl are close friends. They want to settle down in life after college but never realized their love for each other. Jai finds a girl then Aditi starts missing him and his company and the same happened with Jai.

8. Vivah (2006)

Though it’s a kind of old Hindi romantic movie that gives an extraordinary message. Poonam, an orphan, is engaged to Prem, who is from a wealthy family. Unfortunately, two days before their wedding, she suffers from first degree burns after her house catches fire. Prem married her in the hospital and accept her with her condition.

9. Wake up Sid (2009)

Wake Up Sid starring Ranbir Kapoor, was possibly one of the most relatable films of our generation. His character in the movie portrayed the confusion that we face every day. It explored the nuances of an urban relationship beautifully.

10. Barfi (2013)

Barfi was nominated for the Oscar awards and won 7 Filmfare awards including the Best Film. It is one of the sweetest Bollywood movies of recent times. A story of a deaf-mute boy Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) and his affair with two women Shruti (Ileana D’Cruz ) an educated young girl and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) who suffers from Autism. The movie set a milestone in the Hindi love stories where disability meant a life of contempt and distress, Barfi celebrates love, life, and laughter.

11. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)

Ayushmann Khurrana always comes up with a movie that breaks some stereotypes and narrative mindsets of Indian society. The Movie is the story of Two Gay couples Kartik and Aman. The two face a long and difficult path to happiness as they fighting with Aman’s old fashioned family. However, Kartik isn’t prepared to step back until he marries Aman.

12. Band Baja Baaraat (2010)

The tale of two business partners falling in love. Until you are not sure that you are in one-sided love or another person also has feelings for you, then you often shy-away from confessing your love to them. This confusion leads to so much distraction that sometimes it affects your work. The same we can relate with Anushka Sharma’s character Shruti Kakkar as she goes through the same emotions. 

13. Tamasha (2015)

A person may have two characters, one for himself and the second for others. Tara (Deepika) who has seen Ved (Ranbir) on a holiday in Corsica fall with his character. But when she later meets him in Delhi and finds out that he’s completely different, he is not the same guy who she fell in love with. 

14. Cocktail (2012)

A love triangle that we can sometimes relate to. There must have been times when the person you love, loves someone else. Same with Gautam, Meera, and Veronica. Veronica loves Gautam but when she finds out that he shares that feeling with Meera left heartbroken. After getting drunk she explains to him how badly she needs him back. But nothing works. 

15. Masaan (2015)

Masaan was is one of the best romantic Bollywood movies that one cannot afford to miss. A story of love and loss based on the life of B town lovers. Deepak’s love for Shalu knows no caste barriers. Though it is not a film with a happy ending, it teaches us to move on despite our struggles.

16. Ishaqzaade (2012)

Ishaqzaade is a total Indian Romeo-Juliet type movie. Parma Chauhan and Zoya Qureshi are two rebellious individuals who belong to two rival political families. When they fall in love, their families set out to kill them. 

In the end, The two shoot each other in the stomach willingly and die in each other’s arms, smiling. 

17. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)

This film shows us how two people, forced into an arranged marriage, can also fall in love. Prem Prakash Tiwari (Ayushmann Khurrana) marries an educated overweight girl Sandhya ( Bhumi Pednekar). He did this due to his family pressure and was not ready to accept sandhya as his wife. Later they file a divorce case. Suddenly they start understanding each other when the court orders them to stick around for six months. 

18. Shuddh Desi Romance (2013)

Sushant Singh Rajput Starrer, the talented actor who is not between us. A commitment-phobic guy named Raghu absconds from his wedding and meets Gayatri. They soon started in a living relationship. Later, Raghu bumps into Tara, the girl he left at the altar who slowly falls for him.

19. Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)

Indian romantic comedy film directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and starring Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Rajkumar Rao. A love triangle that moves around three people ‑ Bitti Mishra, Chirag Dubey, and Pritam Vidrohi. The best music as well.

20. Salaam Namaste (2005)

Nikhil and Ambar fall in love and decide to live together to know each other better. They part ways when Ambar gets pregnant. However, their tenancy agreement forces them to live together in an awkward relationship.

21. Parineeta (2005)

A love romance based on Kolkata in the era of 1960. Parineeta is a love triangle between Lalita (Vidya Balan), Girish Sharma (Sanjay Dutt), and Shekhar Roy (Saif Ali Khan). It is based on an Indian classic Novel. Shekhar’s father spoils their relationship. One of Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan’s best movies for sure. Vidya Balan was the show stopper with her subtle acting, looks, and grace.

22. Raanjhanaa (2013) 

A story plotted in the colorful city Banaras. A one-sided love story that most of us can relate to this. The story about Kundan’s (Dhanush) selfless love with Zoya (Sonam Kapoor). When Kundan finds that his childhood love, Zoya, likes someone from her community, he decides to forget about her. However, when he realizes she is lying about her fiance’s religion, he goes berserk.

23. The Lunchbox (2013)

A shudh desi romance movie between two people who never meet but keep communicating with notes placed in lunchboxes that are delivered by the famous Mumbai Dabbawalas. The movie received many national and international awards owing to its simple yet powerful script.

24. Akaash Vani (2013)

Hindi romantic drama film of two people Akaash (Kartik) and Vani (Nushrat), who fall in love. Both were happy with each other but couldn’t continue their relationship after finishing college. she is married off to a wicked man. Will destiny give Akaash and Vani a second chance at love?

25. Ramleela (2013)

Indian Hindi-language tragic romance film written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ram and Leela love each other but cannot stay together because of their families. Rajadi and Sanera, have been at war with each other for the past 500 years. At last, they both need to make a sacrifice.
